Check this out. The American Commissioner of Patents in 1872 ruled that the square and compasses emblem could not be used in any trademark or trade name for commercial purposes. But, the law against wearing a fraternal logo to which you do not belong is REAL! You can not wear the symbol or reproduce the ‘coat-of-arms and other insignia’ of any nationally recognized fraternity without permission. As there is no national governing body for Masonry, and many groups use the Square and Compasses as their ‘brand’, and the Square and Compasses are not trademarkable, it falls outside of the any federal, state, or local laws for wearing the accepted symbol of masonry even if you are not a Mason.
